I feel the same way about genAI fanfic. If someone thought it was a respectable way to "produce content" (ugh) for fandom, they'd tag it. But no. They want the credit/accolades for WRITING, and they don't want people to filter out their work bc they feel entitled to readers.

writing Lash as a romantic or even just smutty lead is always threading a fine needle between him being fucking insufferable yet still desirable enough to look past how insufferable he is. like obviously I buy it because I’m mentally unwell, but do readers? do other characters? that’s tougher.

related, but yes, I am always open to fic/art trades. I love writing for other people. it makes me happy to make things that make other people happy.

ways to get fanfic you want without using genAI: 1- write it yourself 2- c0mmissi0n someone 3- offer an art/fic/beta reader trade 4- find an RP buddy 5- find someone taking prompts, doing giveaways, etc. 6- join fandom events 7- make friends/join a community & hope your enthusiasm infects people

AND ANOTHER THING when you “write” with genAI you’re missing the opportunity to laugh at your own jokes or silly one liners. truly depriving yourself of one of the great joys of writing.

one thing that frustrates me about the genAI boom in fan spaces is that it means people have to read with suspicion if they don’t want to support AI use. people should be allowed to write at whatever level of experience or familiarity with grammar or English or whatever without it being presumed AI

years ago in Yhn fandom, someone flooded the tag with their emetophilia fic. I was in hysterics over it & the tag was unusable for people sensitive to this for a few days. I would rather have 1000 instances of stuff like that knowing they lovingly handcrafted it than even 1 untagged genAI fic.

I especially appreciate this bit: "We're not asking for any works to be privated or taken down[...] Instead, we are asking that they be appropriately tagged so that individuals can make informed choices on what they are supporting via reading, kudos, bookmarks, fic recs, [&etc]."

I know that there's no surefire way to completely purge fandom of the entitlement and laziness that feeds into using genAI, but I DO want to be able to avoid the people who succumb to those impulses, just as I would plagiarists (esp given genAI is *built* on plagiarism).

No one is entitled to readers. Readers *are* entitled to filtering out work built on theft and deception, and I'm glad we're starting to develop tools to ferret out same. At minimum, fics MUST be tagged for genAI.
