Origins of Memorial Day — On May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, the recently freed Black population held a parade of 10,000 people to honor 257 dead Union soldiers. After the city fell, the freed Black population unearthed and properly buried the soldiers, placing flowers at their graves.

We passed Green 3 which cut the sweeps budget by $1M. It’s a small reduction, but it earmarks those funds to support things like hygiene stations, expanded low barrier workforce programs, etc. It makes a small down payment on dignity by reducing slightly the violence of sweeps.
