The ICJ decision finds that breaches of climate obligations give rise to reparations - polluters must stop polluting and pay compensation for the loss and damage they've caused. States must act to protect the planet for future generations

The ICJ historic ruling sets-out legal obligations way beyond the Paris Agreement, and opens the door to +++accountability The right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is fundamental for all other human rights, and states must regulate businesses on the harm caused by their emissions.

This is SO important. The International Court of Justice affirms that the failure to phase out #FossilFuels can constitute an internationally wrongful act, giving way to #ClimateReparations for related harm. 🔥 Truly a new dawn for climate action and accountability. ⚖️ #ClimateJusticeAtTheICJ

27/ 🌡️With regard to the temperature threshold relevant for today's ruling, the Court affirms, building on science and COP decisions, that the 1.5c temperature target must be understood as the internationally agreed objective of climate policies!

24/ The Court dismisses this argument unequivocally, noting that there is no contradiction between the UN climate agreements and other norms of international law, on the contrary: other legal frameworks are explicitly cited in the UN climate agreement!

21/ ⚖️ The Court affirms that States' human rights obligations are also part of the applicable law relevant to this case, with ref. to HRs obligations provided by customary law and by human rights treaties. 👉this is fully aligned with recent rulings of human rights courts!
