Just over a month into school. Nits, chickenpox, conjunctivitis, vomiting, diarrhoea, heavy “colds”, excessive tiredness, appetite loss, hand foot and mouth, fever. That’s just what I know of in classes. What % of kids are not learning due to illness - whether in school or off?

Some schools seem to monitor everything to the nth degree. Imagine if they had a daily clickbox rating “how well do you feel today”? Children are human - they learn better when they’re well. Their peers are human too. Their health & education shouldn’t be repeatedly compromised.

It’s morbidly fascinating how we now actually award people for spreading covid. There may be some tiny schools somewhere which don’t have pupils with long covid, but statistically the majority of schools will.

Attendance is important - especially in the first week. The second week is clearly less important which is why we do nothing to curb infections in schools - even in the midst of a current covid wave. How many will spend this Christmas as their first one with long covid?

I wonder if govt ditched drink-driving laws and there was an increase in accidents how much of this we’d see: - it’s only a drink, most people survive - accidents don’t exist - sure, you can’t stop all accidents, so why stop any - life limiting injuries mustn’t be acknowledged

@TweetingCollins thank you for raising the issue of long covid in children & the desperate situation so many thousands of kids find themselves in. This is especially welcome in a week where @wesstreeting said we’d beaten covid, as though long covid, hospitalisations & deaths aren’t still happening.

Either case estimates are astoundingly wrong or nearly everybody is being hospitalised with it. Which is it? Does the media question these oddities? “947 patients admitted in the week up to May 31.” “Cases have also risen by 6.9 per cent with 1,211 cases in the week up to June 4.”

It’s a shame kids have to pick up the slack from so little resilience in schools. “Hey Fred, just up your steroid inhaler even more to try to counteract the poor air in schools.” Recommendations for classroom air remain unmet, despite poorer standards than comparable countries.

Johnson said long covid was ‘bollocks’. Now everyone in a position of power acknowledges it’s obviously very real. So can somebody please riddle me this….how does current covid policy differ from one that assumes long covid is ‘bollocks’? Thanks.

There are c.95,000 inpatients. A proportion of people in hospital whether staff, patient or visitor will catch something there. A proportion of those will have long term health issues as a direct result of poor infection control. That proportion could be lower. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

And the nhs is the biggest employer. That’s a lot of avoidable staff sickness.

It’s not really even about feeding hungry children for govt - that’s a bonus. It’s about making work more accessible. Kids also get to have a little bit of free time with their friends. I can’t get cross about any of that except inadequate funding.

Hospital parking has changed at my local hospital, it’s now pay on exit. They’ve got an option to say if it wasn’t your arrival time or wasn’t your car - great. They don’t have an option for stuck for 40 minutes trying to find parking.

How many are in hospital over the bank holiday, because a promised care plan failed to materialise? How many beds? How many will catch something in hospital? How many leave without an adequate plan to be re-admitted as a result of that?

It becomes more apparent what unpaid carers do when one has to go into hospital. The carer can be supported with a care plan for their recovery and discharge, but what happens to the person they care for?

Coming up to three years with long covid. I used to be able to get showered, dressed, get kids ready and fed, unload dishwasher, maybe chuck a wash on, often squeeze a bit of work in, drop kids off and commute before doing a day’s work. Today I can’t do any of that.

When kids get sick all the time, some adults say ‘at least they’re building up their immunity’. Funny how adults never seem to say it about themselves when they’re frequently ill from school viruses.

Fascinating experiment in how much money people can be made to lose before they can no longer afford the luxury of owning the libs.

When you factor in the cost of lost productivity due to airborne viruses (even if you still attend work when sick), it is astounding that there is so little appetite to reduce virus prevalence. That’s without factoring in those who become too ill to work again.
