Historian, food and comics junkie, and lover of nationalism theory (don't judge).
We received our flu and COVID vaccines and in honor of the event I made a meme 🤣.

Sitting in the Civics for All panel at NYCC. So inspiring what has been accomplished (5 years, 5 million comics given) and what is on the near horizon, in particular the "Know Your Rights" comic that is super exciting.

Dr. Eric White is a top scholar on the Gutenberg Bible, but in his free time, he's been studying one of baseball’s biggest mysteries – Who are the unnamed artists behind the classic Topps baseball cartoons?

AHA panel 203. Excellent panel on the state of graphic history, esp. in teaching. I want more of these. AHA needs whole days devoted to not only using comics in the classroom, but comics as archives / historical records too!!

Boys & Girls pages, or similarly titled, are fascinating! Here I've come across a competition to encourage kids between the ages of 16-19 and 11-16 (I think) to decipher Cook's writing in journal entries from his time on HMS Endeavor. Would love to know if any of those kids went on to be historians!

Worldies ... Obviously not a TT position, but a world-centeric position for 2 years is not bad. USAF may not hit well too, but reading the job ad makes me think they are trying to head in the right direction. So, thought I'd pass it along!

How are those New Year's Resolutions going? I'm off to a slow start this year myself 😆 . This is a "How it Began" by Paul Berdanier. c. 1934, I think this one came from The Evening News out of Harrisburg, PA.

"Our Democracy," from The Smyrna Times 1946. I've found others in the series. Definitely strongly patriotic/jingoistic at times, but loved the sentiment of this one. (Pulled from Chronicling America through the Library of Congress)

Experimenting hard in my intro history class this semester. Today is the 1st test of how it's working. Given how the group activity went I have my doubts. I love the dynamic of teaching food history with cookbooks, but not sure I'm going about it the right way. So many have never seen a cookbook!

Reviewing an article. I refuse to be Reviewer 2, and I do not think it is an outright reject, but hoo boy it does need revision. ... It also makes me reconsider my own submissions over the years!

Forgive me if I've missed this, but do we have something snappy for the missives we send out over here? Or are we stuck with "post"? Clouds? Puffs? Rays? ... maybe I should actually be thinking about grading and not this?

Reading the AHA's Jobs Report (tl;dr there are none) is wild when I look at my department's enrollment crush. Our undergrads want History; all courses fill & waitlists form; meanwhile, our resources are stretched so thin, growth is structurally precluded.

1/2 To test the waters over here, building on a "toot" from Mastodon earlier this year: I'm really interested in History Comics, in particular created before 1940. I have a fairly extensive list from the US, some from Canada, the UK, and France as well as Catalan Auca.
