Mother’s Day – leafing through a coffee-table book of paintings featuring reading women. A few weeks ago I had noticed an elderly lady gifting it to the owner of the café for the book corner. Today I discovered a few pictures I hadn’t seen before. Bliss.

First I read, can’t remember where, that the Czech word kavka means jackdaw. Then I came across the origin of the name. Now I meet them at every turn. From every flock of pigeons, near every rook raiding a rubbish bin, a little greyhead suddenly sticks out & hits me with its piercing pale blue eyes.

Through the city forest by bike with a service station detour to buy an ice lolly I remember from childhood days. I gazed at the sky, at trees of crows, but also into an abyss where a steel staircase leads. Next time I will descend it.

Meanwhile, I prepare my own breakfast and I wonder whether something speaks against slipping the leftover jasmine rice in the porridge.

I step into the kitchen, where the scent of jasmine rice still lingers in the air. Outside, a foretaste of summer. I feed the cat, and in the blink of an eye the bowl is completely emptied. So as not to temper the delight, oh, won't you wait just a little bit longer before administering the meds.

Fun fact: Tart cherry juice is said to have anti-inflammatory properties. The red juice gets its colour from anthocyanins, which are supposed to help reduce the production of inflammatory chemicals and therefore are expected to dampen the fire within the nerves and alleviate pain. 🤔🍒🍷

I attended an impressive prison theatre performance yesterday. What resonates is that every single human is so much more than what we think we know about them or what they are reduced to under certain circumstances.

Red and yellow are the original dominant colours of the wild tulip. Tulips often turn red or yellow when they revert back to their robust wild form and I guess that's beautiful.

Fridaily errand by bike again. No more calf cramps, but still in the process of getting used to wind-blown hair and stopping to take a picture whenever something beautiful rolls by. The withering magnolia, meadows dotted with dandelions; the becoming and passing away amidst seeming simultaneousness.

Almost 100 years ago ~ in a patch of sunlight, two schoolgirls cast reflections in the water as they pick their way across a shallow stream in the misty bushland grounds of Frensham School in Mittagong, New South Wales (Sepia-toned gelatin siver photo by Harold Cazneaux, 1934)

Cycling along a rewildered stream. Rewildered, what a word. Shades of fresh foliage on the path. Isles of blood-red tulips, regathered like revolutionary committees. A magnolia, blooming as if it was the greatest possible freedom. Cramp in the calf, aching knee but nothing better than the airstream.

At a table with people today who didn’t want to talk about the wars in the world but would gladly give the green light for shooting rooks that pilfer cereal grains from fields & rummage through the town bins. Not for the 1st time I thought myself to be in the wrong film. Or rather in the wrong life.
