19 June 1940 // HM Trawler Murmansk was taking part in the evacuation of British forces from Brest but ran aground in the harbour in the early hours of the morning and was abandoned as a wreck. The Germans later salvaged her and put her into service as a patrol boat. #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

A visit to a silver mine

#another interesting #museum. The #collection of one person, displayed beautifully and again with #passion.

An interesting encounter earlier today. We love junk shops for potential exhibits when in France. In this one we found a selection of WW1 relic grenades on offer. Stunning Mdle16 stick grende being one. Still very viable!

We are having a holiday. But history is never far from the surface

29 May 1940 // Destroyer HMS Grafton, carrying troops away from Dunkirk, was torpedoed by U.62 off Nieuwpoort after stopping to rescue survivors from HMS Wakeful. 29 May 1940 // HM Trawler Calvi was sunk by a direct hit from a bomb at her berth in Dunkirk harbour during a German air raid. She settled on the bottom with masts and funnel above the water. One member of her crew died later of injuries received. #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

5 May 1940 // Submarine HMS Seal was spotted on the surface by a German aircraft while on her way to lay mines in the Kattegat, and forced to dive. Despite this, and the presence of enemy trawlers searching for her, she completed her mission, but hit a German mine while exiting the Kattegat. [1/4]

To mark #StPatrick'sDay, here is the story of Arthur Evans CBE, of the 2nd #Irish #Guards.

11th March 1940. U-31 became the first U-Boat in the Second World War to be sunk by an aircraft, a Blenheim of 82 Sqn. All 58 men on board were killed, but the boat was salvaged and repaired by the Germans. It was sunk again, on 2nd Nov 1940, by HMS Antelope; 44 crew were rescued. #NavalHistory 🧵1/5
