If we had any doubts before, the statements today by the leader and deputy leader of the Conservative Party enthusiastically supporting the American actions in Venezuela make clear that the federal Conservative Party as currently constituted must never hold office in this country.

End speed traps and roadside breathalyzer, since they donât give drivers a fair opportunity to evade the law? What about police use of fingerprint and DNA evidence which are unfair to criminals, since it makes it harder for them to escape punishment?

The active element of the CPC - the base - is hard right, even extreme and will no doubt continue to dominate nomination meetings, and leadership races. A moderate CPC leader would have won a clear majority. Still more than 40% voted for a Cdn version of the Republican Party.

If the Conservatives had a different leader - and not someone whose entire life has been about partisan attack - the time might be right for a unity gov in Canada. The country is under threat. The welfare of the country mattered to past Conservative leaders. It is not part of Poilievreâs agenda.

Once again the talk is about party strategy and popular appeal when it should be about who is best able to lead the country during the Trump threat. Clearly it is not the person parroting Trumpâs bogus claim about Canada being a major source of Fentanyl.
