Local governments are the closest level of government to communities and we have deep understanding of the impact of policies and investment. UBCM resolutions offer an opportunity for a low-cost and highly effective province-wide gaps analysis. It’s a shame there isn’t more space for debate.

Our resolution for Free Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy as part of Postpartum Care was supported at UBCM this week! There was even an applause ♥️ Unfortunately a new change with UBCM policy was also supported and resolutions like this will no longer be considered for debate due to local government scope.

Elected officials expect public scrutiny as a regular part of the job, but personal attacks, especially on social media, have increased noticeably in recent years. Some local electeds are developing a peer support network focused to help. #UBCM25 youtu.be/TXqfFp3cbqY

The 2025 UBCM Convention starts next week! After getting support from our local area association last April, Councillor Szpak and I will be bringing this forward for consideration and debate with our provincial colleagues.

This was a delightful surprise on the bike ride home today. Spotted on the E&N trail just up from the Langford/Colwood border.

This is a great discussion on how powerful it can be to support and lift alternative modes of transportation. Addressing barriers (physical and social), providing options (through share programs) and investing in safe and protected infrastructure has supported an evolution of cycling in London.

We have had some misinformation floating around about Langford’s priorities on safe routes to school and our readiness for the opening of SĆIȺNEW̱ SṮEȽIṮḴEȽ Elementary. Not only are the sidewalks ready to go, the walking trip is a huge improvement from last year. 🧵1 of 3

This was a fantastic and fun way to end the summer and I believe it was the first mass ride in Langford. People of all ages were bopping, grooving and feeling the beat from the awesome DJs, all while riding through the streets of Langford.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day and my heart goes out to all those feeling loss. While my personal experience is from that of a tradesperson, I know this touches many people. I hope there is a day soon where overdose no longer permeates our communities.

Langford Bike Rave is this Saturday!

I’m grateful to have the support of Langford Council to match the $5K donation to the Forge and collaborate on a joint media statement with the WSDA. Tradespeople are not only building our communities but are also our neighbours and family members. The Forge is creating community support.

Yesterday we got a sneak peek at the 1st building on the new John Horgan Campus opening in just a few weeks. It is an exciting evolution to Langford City Centre and will be transformative for the community. The learning spaces are beautiful and I can’t wait to see students and staff here soon!

Couple things flagged right away, 1. We now have a Federal BCH (Build Canada Homes) and a Provincial BCH (BC Housing) 2. Cutting DCCs in half should make everyone nervous as these charges are already reviewed by multiple levels of government. They are not frivolous & take affordability into account

I’m not against cars. I own one. But we need to make it much, much easier, pleasant, and safer to walk, bike, or take transit than it is to drive somewhere by myself in an empty car. And there’s no way to do that without making some drivers angry. Thankfully, more and more drivers understand.

Something really fun is coming to Langford before the end of the summer and I can’t wait to share more about it!

Langford is creating an exciting new Arts and Culture Strategy. As part of public engagement, a Kudoboard has been created to capture great initiatives that people want to see in Langford. There have been some great contributions including placemaking, festivals, community hubs & more. Check it out!

West Shore Parks and Recreation offers a 1/2 day skateboard summer camp just for girls and it is a super inclusive and positive space for all skill levels. Programs like these can open doors into communities, have life changing impacts and are just a whole lot of fun.

Veterans Memorial Park is expanding, and we want to hear from you! To address the growing need for greenspace in the downtown core, the City of Langford acquired 1.35 acres of adjacent land in 2022 to expand Veterans Memorial Park. Survey closes end of day, August 17th.

Well done @victoria.ca & @capitalbike.ca! Travelling by bike can be a very affordable way of getting around but the cost of owning a bike can be a barrier, not to mention how quickly kids can grow out of their bikes. I love this initiative!

Langford is updating its Environmental Development Permit Areas (EDPA) guidelines and maps. EDPAs guide how land is developed near important natural areas—like forests, lakes, and wildlife corridors—and features such as streams or old-growth trees. Survey is open until July 14, 2025

I am so proud of the work happening in Langford. Over the past 14 days we introduced a micromobility program, announced an office for 10 new doctors in an accessible location in the City Centre, and finally Council approved an OCP that makes bold moves and doesn’t shy away from meaningful solutions.

“Getting sh#t done” was invigorating for a youthful city but Langford is evolving. This week council adopted the OCP and it emulates this transformation. We are now getting great things done with an emphasis on implementation and outcomes. We are planning for a diverse, healthy, and thriving city.🧵

I was heartbroken when I learned about this. Please read the full statement from the city to understand why this was a heavy decision. It is incredibly challenging not to have an immediate solution to a complex problem but I am committed to exploring options and advocating for long-term solutions.

This is tomorrow night. We are planning for 100,000 so when the city grows to that population, it will have everything it needs to thrive. Since 1st reading of this bylaw, Langford has been added as a city with housing targets by the province. The need for planning is more important than ever.

This is a huge loss. Island Sexual Health is very skilled at what they do and provide a positive, safe and inclusive program at a critical moment in a young person’s life. It impacts their mental, physical and emotional health and paves a path for positive body image and healthy relationships.

Had a great morning participating with my family at the CFB Esquimalt Navy Run. We did the 5km run/walk with a very exciting cannon race start. It was also great to catch up with a fellow mother in politics, Darlene Rotchford, MLA for Esquimalt-Colwood and the Province’s Military Liaison

Today I had the opportunity to participate in the CRD W̱SÁNEĆ Awareness Learning Session. I’m so grateful to the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council who provided this opportunity to deepen understanding of the W̱SÁNEĆ people who have stewarded the lands which the CRD operates on for tens of thousands of years.
