The anger & retribution directed particularly at Chinese college students could severely damage Japan. Chinese students comprise 37% of exchange students in Japan. Chinese workers also account for 67% of the 28K highly-skilled worker visas granted in 2024.

At current rates, Kariya writes, Japan will have 3.42M foreign workers in 2030 and 5.91M in 2040. However, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), a government body, predicts the industry will need 6.88M foreign workers by 2024.

Writing for Nikkei, Sophia University professor Kariya Takehiko makes an obvious point: Japan can't afford xenophobic immigration policies when it's increasingly dependent on foreign labor. Even CURRENT immigration rates won't meet the demand for workers.
