I made this little VRChat world for a friend, a world I made in 1~2 hours I think making liminal spaces is a really nice way to learn about lighting, because the scene is simple and you can fully focus on lighting. If you want to learn about lighting, try making a liminal-style scene first.

Sometimes I see avatars using 4k/8k textures to add ultra-high details (textile, skin, leather), but it's rarely needed. So, here's a short thread about Secondary Maps/Details mask, which most shaders support (even Unity Standard). Example: 8192px NM | 256px tiled NM #VRChat

Since I got the Bigscreen Beyond 2 headset, which uses OLED panels, I noticed that a lot of VRC worlds including mine appear too dark on that headset. Dark gray looks pitch black. So I worked on a little brightness slider, similar to what some games do. #VRChat

Modelling is technically done, now I'm mostly working on scripts and sfx. The world is bigger than the first NUCLEUS world. I did a few test runs with friends and it seems like the world can be fully explored in 1~2 hours.

Yesterday, I learned that the VRChat open-beta lets you view performance-related statistics, like draw calls or triangle counts. Really useful for creators! The panel is customizable, graphs can be added or removed depending on your needs. #VRChat

Silent's fake light shader (gitlab.com/s-ilent/fake...) seems to work really well for adding subtle, glowy fog effects, like I did below with a few skyscrapers. I put the fog material on a big sphere, then placed a sphere on top of each skyscraper. #VRChat

Can't recommend @orels1.bsky.social's shaders enough, even just standard; it runs great on Android/iOS while also having reflection probe occlusion that makes baked scenes pop more. There are also notes in-UI like this, making features understandable for less-technical people like me w/o research:

(1/5) UV TILE DISCARD UV Tile Discard is a really interesting feature supported by Poiyomi, LilToon, etc. It lets you toggle parts of a mesh on and off without needing to use blend shapes or multiple Skinned Mesh Renderers (SMRs), great for performance ranking! #VRChat

Inspired by the VRChat world "讐復を能える for VRChat" (by yu_nakaito) that features a system that plays an Audio source through the VRChat camera, I tried to do something similar for fun. The second part shows that the audio source is attached to the lens, not the actual camera screen.

World PhysBones just got released in open beta (SDK 3.9.1) ! To test that new component, I made a door that works without any Udon code, and it was relatively easy to setup. Functionalities are very similar to avatar PhysBones, bones can be pushed and grabbed #VRChat

(1/5) A little thread about render queue and depth buffer: Wanna take pictures of your VRChat avatar with a nice depth of field, but transparent parts of your avatar aren't in the same focus plane? Set the render queue of transparent materials to below 2500, like 2499, and enable ZWrite. #VRChat

On VRChat, I sometimes stay on Orange since I’ve got friend groups that don’t mix well, like EN speaking friends joining a GER speaking instance etc. I think it would be nice if we could set status per friend category (In the above case, "Green for Germans, Orange for others")

The last Bakery update added the component "Bakery Light Filter", which allows you to easily bake light shining through stained glass, you just need to add that component on your stained glass mesh. No need to use custom cookie textures on your light sources anymore! #VRChat

A few months ago, I shared a music visualizer shader on my GitHub (see quote). I recently added that visualizer to my avatar. I wasn't so sure where to place it, but I decided to put it on my shoes. I'm pretty happy with the results. #VRChat

I used bicubic sampling on my avatar to reduce texture resolution and lower texture memory usage. 1. 4k texture 2. 256px texture 3. 256px texture with bicubic sample 4. 256px texture with bicubic sample, sharpened using floor(sampledColor + lineThickness) #VRChat

I experimented around with an opaque waterslide shader that uses a blurred panosphere to fake transparency and light shining through it (translucency or subsurface scattering). The second image shows what the slide would look like with a regular unblurred panosphere. #VRChat

After using Mochie's Standard shader for 2 years, I wanted to try out z3y's lit shader. Today, I discovered that creating a Lit material automatically assigns all textures included in the folder. There's also an included channel packing tool.
