Incredible. I just stumbled upon an upload of the "4K Remaster" of Nadia that aired in March on NHK's BS8K channel. It's exactly the same as the crap upscale that GKIDS released in the UK in 2023. GKIDS said they released the source material exactly as NHK gave it to them... they weren't lying.

Dancouga's second ED somehow perfectly encapsulates the ambitions of its villain while at the same time looks totally unrelated to what you'd expect from a combiner mecha series. Many anime endings don't match with the theme or content of their show. Dancouga plays both sides.

This ED will never cease to be the best.

"Dancouga Blu-ray re-release is expensive!" I agree, list price of $100 is ADV boxset days but still a good value for what you get. Looks like we are unfortunately coming out of the "I'll try that for 35 bucks" era of vintage anime just the same. For Dancouga though, look what the alternative was...

As I slowly go through and remux all the videos in modern bitrate for the almost decade-long run of my Vintage Anime panel, I am as always incredibly grateful to those who share clean rips of vintage anime. Doubly so to those who label and document their torrents properly.

When I talk about how much Nyaa has grown into a great resource and community, it's because of stuff like this: nyaa.si/view/1752129 Cowboy Bebop, 210GB file size. Includes basically the entire audio mix across the half dozen or so releases, extensively timed to the BD version. Incredible.

One of these days Marmalade Boy is going to get the quality release it deserves. One of the rare cases of Discotek fumbling the ball with the (analog?) transfer they used on their DVD release- and then upscaled that for the Blu-ray, which creates different issues and doesn't solve anything.

But for how long... As jazz musician Bob Baldwin said, "Remember, if you stream it, you don't own it." Sentai needs to get this out on Blu-ray. I seem to recall they sat on the license for 4 years, then put out the stream, only to kill it a year later when the license expired.

🎵 Midnight submarine 🎶 I can't believe Future Police Urashiman is going to stream again. Sentai let it die on the vine years ago. Koten_Gars actually ripped the subs and released a 1080p version in 2018 (96.7 GB)! Largest single show torrent I've ever grabbed. This is a stupid fun series.

Damn, have to double dip here. I figured it didn't do well enough to warrant a Blu-ray release after the DVD set. Which always blows my mind since it's the best selling shojo manga of all time.

This new fansub is leaps and bounds better than the old one. I think the old one had been partially based off an ancient VHS fansub. I guess I should also preface that Mellowlink is way more violent than the rest of VOTOMs. Has more of a wandering gunman western vibe as well. Classic revenge story.

Found the A-ko 3 cel I passed up on two years ago on Anime-Link's site. Technically this is ALSO a Project A-ko 3 OP cel, with C-ko partially out of her dream state.

I think Devilman Lady still holds up and is my favorite of all the Devilman productions. And since Jun is a supermodel in the anime, it also counts as part of the idol subgene. 😆

Thanks to @nicknickgoose.bsky.social for alerting me to this Sailor Moon budget rerelase at the Kinokuniya booth at Fanime. I've literally lived down the road from the SJ location since it first opened, so I usually don't dig through their booth. I bought a second for the future panel prize pool.

Both sessions of Vintage Anime Name That Year at FanimeCon 2026 were very close, the final scores don't tell the whole story. Session A was looking like a tiebreaker was imminent (I was getting prepped) but contestant 3 held them off. Session B was much the same, wit some back and forth to the end.

The dates for California Extreme 30 were just announced, August 8-9, making that an even more stacked month.

This is the Project A-ko cel of B-ko I bought from Anime Link at Fanime. "One layer, no vinegar" I said to myself when re-bagging it. Absolutely stunning, tiny bit of paint loss / thinning on her shadow, but beautiful. And the Project A-ko 3 OP cel we bought in 2023.

Fanime makes me feel young. It truly does. However, Fanime Monday causes me to think about people who I've met through the con whom I don't see anymore. Whether that's due to them moving on, or attending other events, and in some cases passing away. There is an energy that is different without them.

Attending a not-so-great panel spurred a conversation between my wife and I about a panel I want to develop - which spurred another discussion about how most anime doesn't ultimately tell a satisfying story. Which meant we spent 2 hours talking about it, instead of going to bed for Fanime tomorrow.🤣

This was my favorite round this year. I could see the wave of people figuring out what the title was as the OP played- first when Dororo came on screen, and then about half the room once Hyakkimaru appeared. I also love the OP song, since it's mostly just a bunch of gibberish.

Wooo, I won a round of Anime Name That Tune! Cutey Honey ED and Kigamure Orange Road OP did it. That is an awesome panel by the way.

I don't know what has reduced Fanime Day Zero intensity more - the total absence of registration lines, or how closed off most of the convention center is these days. You used to be able to roam around on Thursday, but that was a long time ago.

Nothing like catching a remuxing issue two days before your panel! Thankfully its a tiebreaker video and I was able to re-encode. No idea what happened, as I think I'm using the same raw. Maybe a codec hiccup the first time.

Vintage Anime - Name That Year returns to FanimeCon this Saturday! Join us on May 23rd in Panels Room 3, 10am - noon. Amazes me how this whole thing began in 2018 as a way to try to make an OP showcase not totally boring.

"We're intergalactic taxi drivers and everyone else is just along for the ride." It took both of us to troubleshoot (yet another) heat adhesive failure but we were able to save this patch I embroidered. Not enough time to make one for the other sleeve, but I'll get around to it eventually.

"Hey David, what game has been kicking your balls in all night?" Chapters 3 and 6, especially 3, are so incredibly random in that to have even a slim chance you have to be incredibly lucky with vitality pickups. I need to call it a night, which means doing it again later.

Something that moving to a larger video aspect (640 x 480 in most instances, which is the full avaliable slide real estate in the panel) has created, is the need to go back through the whole video history of the panel and remux every video again.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Yuji Ohno. A legendary musician who was the heart & soul of most of the music of Lupin the Third for nearly 50 years will certainly live on as his music & themes will continue to be synonymous with the famous thief.
