A crowd gathered before sunrise this morning, and a steady line of guests waited for a simple breakfast. Support staff told us it was a tough morning, with nonstop requests for help. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, our volunteers met every moment with patience and heart, and we’re grateful for them.

Peace! We gave out 1,000 sack lunches in under one hour today! Thank you to everyone who made and donated them. The Portland Trailblazers staff made 500 of them!

Some people don’t realize how hard it is to get housing once you’re homeless. Our staff tried to help a man apply for a tiny home. The waitlist was open for only five hours before it filled! It shouldn’t be this hard for someone to find a place to live.

We got a voicemail from a guest we haven't seen in a while. This is a message for our supporters as well! "I used to get meals from you guys. I wanted to update you. I’m off the street, I’m working now. You’ve seen me at my worst, and I want to thank you for everything you’ve done for me. "

Today, 15 men in our transitional housing program received haircuts from volunteers with The Barbers. Our program offers a place to live so men can focus on recovery, employment, and rebuilding their lives. Small acts of care help people feel confident. We’re grateful to the volunteers.

Once a month outside Blanchet House, you might see Paul Susi at a pop-up table. Using his money, he helps people apply for birth certificates and replacement IDs. On Thurs, he wrote checks for 58 people! paulsusi.wordpress.com/pdx-id-assistance/

Update on Our Women’s Shelter: Bathrooms are under construction, the exterior is painted, and local Girl Scouts brightened the fence with yarn hearts. We’re aiming for a late January 2026 opening and look forward to welcoming women into this much-needed refuge.

Free vet clinic Tues, Nov. 11, from 11-1:30 across from Blanchet House at 310 NW Glisan. Veterinarians with the Oregon Humane Society will offer vaccines (including rabies), flea and tick, food, and supplies. First come, first served. Thanks, Lan Su Chinese Garden, for the use of your parking lot!

We gave out 1,100 sack lunches on Saturday in addition to serving hot meals!! Every lunch was made and donated by supporters from their homes, many decorated with fun drawings and words of encouragement. Sign up to make lunches on our website.

We had it all tonight at BH! Pizza slices, sack lunches to take with you, and Halloween candy to boot! Many guests came in a good mood, and those who entered hungry or sad left full of food and perhaps smiling after a fun interaction near the exit treats. Thanks to everyone for your support.

Tonight we were able to offer seconds! SNAP benefits were released by the governor, and the difference was immediate. But this relief won’t last. Next year, access to SNAP will be harder, and more people will turn to Blanchet House for food. Thank you for your support now and in the months ahead.

Thanks to Coach Crystal Corona for bringing her Tualatin High School students to serve lunch in the cafe. We hope you all found the volunteer experience rewarding and meaningful. You brought smiles to so people going through a difficult time.

For the first time, we had to extend breakfast service so everyone in line could get a plate. Rain poured and wind blew, while people waited for a hot meal and coffee. Usually we’re able to offer seconds but not today. The need in our city is growing fast.

A gray, rainy day is the perfect time to create something bright. Our café staffer Ava came up with a Halloween craft to bring a little fun to lunchtime. The spooky decorations now hanging in our café were made with love by the guests we serve.

This is what outreach looks like. Not in an office but on the sidewalk, where people are. How are people supposed to fill out housing or health forms without a phone or computer? They can’t! That’s why Blanchet House’s peer support staff meet people where they are, literally, bridging the gap.

We’re happy to introduce the newest Blanchet House Managers, Dave Quezada and Paul Siscoe! House Managers play a big role in making our transitional housing program feel like home for the 50 men working hard to rebuild their lives here. They’re the steady hands and caring hearts behind the scenes.

Eagle Scout Levi McClure taught himself how to make leather belts so he could help people experiencing homelessness. Levi delivered the first batch of 60 belts to Blanchet House for them to distribute to guests visiting their free clothing closet.
