re: the abruptness of the last arc’s ending— I think it helps to reread and see that this was the real emotional climax of this arc and that everything after that was just solving the locked room problem rather than being the conclusion to a part of a character arc.

You know, there is precedent for this chapter. The way Denji sees it, he's deeply annoyed when she puts herself between him and a "great friendship" and when he looks at her he sees the "burden" preventing him to have other relationships. As he does not see what nayuta (&we readers) can see clearly.

This is twice in a row that I’m interpreting Fumiko try to frame herself in a romantic interest’s position relative to Yoshida- either by taking on the traits of his interest or making gestures that traditionally indicate it- that’s received with disinterest.

I read this as Fumiko murdering this man and eliminating the only other possible full account of what happened here that PS would’ve had. Only she has the full story and she can spin it in practically any way she wants- and I think that way is going to get Yoshida under her thumb.
