I had a great time at the International Research Culture Conference at Warwick yesterday seeing the great work happening across the sector. But there were two things I did for the first time that I wanted to chat about in the context of research culture: I skipped a session and I took a nap.

🔗With news of the REF 'pause' we want to remind you that we're here to support + strengthen research cultures. This matters because: 1. Positive research cultures enable research excellence and impact. 2. “Excellence” is too often defined in narrow, traditional terms, and can be deeply exclusionary.

It will be of no surprise that I have some FEELINGS about the REF "pause". Important to remember: 1. positive research cultures *enable* research excellence and impact; 2. the idea of "excellence" often takes a traditional view on knowledge production/exchange, which can be inherently exclusionary.

People often ask me why I moved into research culture and/or why I left academia completely 7 years ago. The answer is this: “Paying workers by the hour means treating their labour like a commodity, and having no regard to people’s need for income security and fair treatment.”
