This graph is great data communication. City budgets are amounts of $ are hard to grasp (like how do I think about millions of dollars when I'm just trying to make rent?) but this really highlights how huge the gap is between what was promised versus delivered for this essential public service.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the shifting baseline concept as applied to everyday life. People in their 20’s now have no memory of highly functional systems, products (from blenders to sweaters) that were so well made you could hand them down across generations, or even helpful customer service.

My 5th grade science teacher said he would give extra credit to anyone who could tell him another mammal that lays eggs besides platypus. I found the answer in a dang encyclopedia and when I tried to tell him about echidnas he said it was a trick question and there weren't any.

When you are getting the hard sell for anything, you are usually in the process of getting ripped off. Keep that in mind re: AI.

Folks are celebrating the NYC library budget essentially staying FLAT from last year. HOWEVER it doesn't keep up with 3.8% inflation so it means that number is actually still A CUT from last year. The budget is less than Adams' budget. Impossible to get people to see past flashy headlines.

I'm up to four help desk tickets to try to get my preschooler enrolled in our district schools. The first two before even getting to the correct enrollment page because there are somehow like six. Constantly amazed at how awful they are at the most basic of data collection or communication.

Perhaps it is bad for one company getting hacked to upend the entire k-higher Ed educational system.

My local library is holding a teens event to talk about death and dying and I started crying when I saw the newsletter about it-as a kid who lost a parent at that age an event like that would have been everything to me. Libraries are so important.

I was telling someone about all the cool things in our local library's digital creativity studio and she said, "but you have to pay to use those right?" It felt great to tell her, no these are free community resources. She said she definitely plans to visit her local branch soon.

I co-ran a warming kit assembly and donation drive for our local shelter today and was so heartened by the way our community showed up. We had more donations than we had room in boxes to sort them into, including an absolutely stunning array of hand knit items from my local yarn shop folks.
