White evangelicals tell me all the time that their theological heroes owning slaves was merely a coincidence to rather than a consequence of their theology. But there are too many parallels between their views about sovereignty and slavery to consider the two topics as unrelated.

I’ve never seen anyone articulate my thoughts better… Was enslaving Africans a coincidence of their theology.. OR A consequence. It was a consequence…and the theology was never changed.

Christianity has been used to justify and encourage imperialism, enslaving, segregating. It’s now being used to hating and harming refugees, queer folks, black folks, women. We all have the Golden Rule at all historical moments. History is watching.

Evil has always used religion to oppress and harm others and justify this type of corrupt behavior. I choose Jesus and loving my neighbor as myself. The only people Jesus ever condemned were the religious people who embodied false piety.

I choose Jesus, who demonstrated and IS love in its purest form. I reject religion/indoctrination/hate, all used to dominate and control others. Jesus seemed to reject those things, too.

Christianity is easily used to encourage hate. Is that really the religion you chose?

Evangelical Christians are the ones who indoctrinate hate, in the form of constant differentiation: We are not like those evil folks over there. And in so doing inculcate forms of hate towards the outsiders. The "different" are to be judged & spurned. The Good Samaritan parable no longer applies.

Christianity & the Bible are unmatched in the ability to divide people, create fear, generate hate, obliterate conscience, produce blind followers, justify violence and oppression. Just looking at history. 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you read the four gospels, it seems like the 12 apostles are power-hungry, self-centered, stubborn, thick-headed men, plus one traitor. The women are the brave and faithful heroes. Ponder that.

So many in the conservative Christian world believe that God only loves people that perform perfectly. This is a cruel father. I love my children regardless of their performance.

I also think Jesus gets angry.
