I had a great chat with Lauren for this podcast! And I even included my knitting as an essential piece of "field gear" for a recreation ecologist. 😀

I end my classes w/ time for students to write a short reflection of what they learned that day. I typically include a pic of my cats on the slide w/ the reflection prompt. Students have started sending me photos of their pets & plants to include on that slide. This brings me so much joy this term.

Been pretty quiet on here lately for lots of reasons but mostly b/c I was trying to disconnect during sabbatical. But! Field studies are ramping up and I just got back from a lovely place with great colleagues from University of Montana. Yay for collaborative science!

On sabbatical this year, so I haven’t taught since March 2023. I guest lectured today for a grad student so she didn’t have to cancel class. I came home after and immediately napped. 😆 I love teaching but forgot how draining it is - especially as an introvert.

Since I am on sabbatical this term, I have been trying to work as little as possible on Fridays to give myself three day weekends most weeks. Today I used some of my free time to bake a “confetti cake” covered in multicolored stars! 💫

Hi folks! I am an Associate Prof at Oregon State and study recreation ecology and outdoor recreation management. I mostly work in parks and protected areas in the U.S. and my research aims to help balance recreation use with conservation goals. I also knit (A LOT) & have two adorable cats. #HiSciSky

Today was my first official day of my academic sabbatical. Really looking forward to some focused time for reading, writing, and - of course - some knitting. 😊 Today I took a midday knitting and reading break outside in my garden where our roses are having a second bloom.

Today was commencement at OSU! Congrats to Dr. Susie Sidder! 🎓🎉 She was also the first PhD student I have had the honor of hooding!

It's been just a lovely day. My sister and I wandered around Bar Harbor all day, there was sunshine, I ate amazing fig ice cream, and I received my Dept's Outstanding Faculty Award! This award is voted on by the graduate students, so it's an extra special one for me. 😊

Tried to travel from Portland, OR to Portland, ME today (3 flights). Instead I took 1 flight, spent 8 hours in the SLC airport, and am now about to board a red-eye to Newark and will arrive in Portland, ME tomorrow at 11am. At least there were some good views on that 1 flight. 😆

Spent the morning wandering around a peony farm, the weather was perfect and the flowers were stunning.

I’m at Yosemite NP for a project this week. But found time to wander around the park. I didn’t realize how much my introverted soul needed to just meander in the sunshine (which I haven’t seen for months..) and not talk to another human for hours on end. Feeling so refreshed! 😆

I carried my book for the @osuteaching book group up the Mist Trail in Yosemite National Park. That way I could read while I ate lunch at the footbridge. 😊 Here for work, so figured I’d have a “working lunch” as well.

Final grades submitted! Finished my winter term grading with a couple of days to spare.🎉 I Just need to wrap up a couple of research presentations and then Spring Break!

The students in my capstone class did an amazing job presenting their final projects today! They worked on developing their own recreation management plans for a local protected area. I was so proud of them, but I am also so glad to be done with 8:30am classes for a while.😴

Brought all my sci-fi nerdiness into a work meeting recently. And my random comment about May 4th being a good day for a meeting because it’s Star Wars day made it into the official meeting minutes. 😆🤓

Winter term is always intense for me. Teaching 2 courses (1 w/ a lab) and no TA support + service and research related meetings, means many days of the week I don’t check a single thing off my to-do list. I used to feel SO unproductive and stressed after those days…

Drink all the coffee! Ugh, this night owl is not a fan of 8:30am classes. 😴 1 early morning down, 19 to go. 😆
