Playing the minute cryptic today, I feel like I understand the thinking behind cryptic crosswords even less. The explanation going "I love how stretchy this clue is". Isn't a clue supposed to not be stretchy?! And if it's even the slightest bit stretchy, aren't you supposed to put a (?)?

Its kind of annoying, but also eye opening how when I joined a conversation about sports betting, the subject was quickly changed after I had given a few sentences as to why I was against it, and the predatory practices the whole industry has been taking advantage of. No one wants to hear it.

After playing around with cryptics, I'm both starting to get them, but also understanding why I have a love hate relationship with them. Cryptic clues are all about saying one thing and meaning another (often with wordplay involved). The make-or-break of the quality of the clue for me is (1/2)

Kind of a long, thinky post: (1) Something I encourage everyone to do nowadays is, if you forget something which you can solve with a simple Google search... Give your brain some time to ponder it for a bit. Train your memory a bit. I want to tell a little story as to why.

About a year or two ago, I hosted a puzzly scavenger hunt with a grand prize at the end. I was very proud of it, and since its made entirely with word docs (which are still preserved), it still technically functions There's still some space at the leaderboard docs.google.com/document/d/1...

I actually made progress on a personal project which, isn't near fruition yet, but still is just slightly more visible, which honestly is progress in of itself. And I have plans to work on it this week too, with set times to do so. It feels more like I'll actually contribute something worthwhile.

Tonight's a struggle

I've never been destroyed down to my soul more than when I was jokingly compared to the squished down version of Rex from super Mario world, then finding out that it's actually a VERY accurate comparison.

Maybe I should have my own daily game. Something that can be put together in maybe 30 mins-an hour, but novel and opens your mind a bit. Connections is a fun example of something like that. Maybe I can find something unique.

Something I've been struggling with lately is a fulfilling purpose beyond work. My life as of late has just been 'work on weekdays do nothing on weekends'. I've made many attempts to write mysteries, though they always fell off. And I like designing puzzles, but there's no purpose to them.
