Following the decision from the Board of the Adelaide Festival, The Australia Institute is withdrawing its support from this year’s literary festival. Here is our statement, and a personal one from me.

As a former Director of Adelaide Writers' Week I am appalled that the Adelaide Festival Board has rescinded Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah's invitation to the 2026 AWW, explicitly linking its decision to the shattering crimes in Bondi. A shocking decision that will and should have far-reaching consequences.

The canonical example is the the Royal Commission on the Activities of the Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union (the Costigan Commission) that ended up running for 4 years and ended up uncovering massive tax fraud at the big end of town.

Just a note but Royal Commissions basically never finish on time and tend to go in very oddly unpredictable directions far from what they were sent to do - done well or badly TBH.
