#LindisfarneDig2025 Day 24 End of an era. After heavy rain overnight another complete site clean needed but we got there. Thanks to everyone who’s followed the story and the lovely supportive comments. It’s been a special time.

#LindisfarneDig2025 Day 23 A dry day and the last digging. Tapes and drawing boards out while yet more graves appear and are uncovered. The last skeleton lifted and there’s a great effort to bottom the ditch. Day ends with a big clean so all’s ready to model. An immense effort.

Great Seas IV - Ardnamurchan Lighthouse viewed from Briaghlann, #Ardnamurchan Ardnamurchan Lighthouse on the "Headland of the Great Seas" was taken on a stormy afternoon when waves whipped up by Force 7-8 winds crashed into Briaghlann and up onto the small coral sand beach on Dubh Rubha Mor.

#LindisfarneDig2025 Day 22 A washout on site so everyone helped in the finds room cleaning some of the many trays of bones ready for packing away. The flotation tank was working earlier in the week looking for seeds and organic material and the cross arm found last year is on show.

Above the Veil - Castle Tioram, Loch Moidart, #Moidart A shot taken from above Castle Tioram on a misty September morning as the sun rose above the hills to the east, slowly burning off the wispy veil that blanketed Loch Moidart, to reveal the castle and then the island upon which it sits.

#LindisfarneDig2025 Day 21 The race is on to dig the ditch in Trench 9 and an immense effort found the edges. Another piece of name stone found and more burials recorded. The ditch in Trench 2 has been bottomed, samples taken for dating and yet more burials found in layers. A very good day.

There's always a chance that a flock of Pink-footed Geese might pick up a straggler of another species. This Greenland White-fronted Goose was with a small flock in Gleann Mor a couple of days ago. @scottishbirding.bsky.social @hebridesbirds.bsky.social

#LindisfarneDig2025 Day 20 Graves, walls and the ditch. New burials found in Trench 9 showing as a soil change and another under the wall. Burial lifted so the ditch is going down. Sampling and a half section under the slab in Trench 2 and another wall in the burnt kiln area.

#LindisfarneDig2025 Day 19 Bringing it all together in Week 4. The huge slab in Trench 2 is being removed in bits. All the burials under tarps ready for modelling or lifting. Many will remain in situ. Trench 9 burials being bagged and labelled while the later rubble has gone.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

A day off so a visit to the lovely village of St Abbs with its poignant little bronze statue commemorating three fishermen lost in the great storm of 1881, their families hopelessly looking out to sea. There’s now an independent lifeboat funded by locals and charitable donations.

#LindisfarneDig2025 Day 18 The end of Week 3 and work has progressed well. Burials lining up everywhere and being recorded, modelled and lifted, leaving just an impression. More large slabs removed and the walls around the kiln being traced. A day off and then the last push.

#LindisfarneDig2025 Day 17 The ditch has been found in the middle of Trench 9 with at least four burials in it. The big wall’s width now clear and green glazed pottery dates it to the medieval period. Has Trench 2 got a stone lined grave or just a row of stones? To be continued.
