On the final day of our study mission, we toured the Climeworks Mammoth facility in Iceland, the world’s largest direct air capture (DAC) site. DAC removes CO2 from the atmosphere and is (usually) stored in some capacity. It’s a nascent industry, still defining its role in climate mitigation.

On day three of our study mission, our delegation of climate ambassadors visited the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, which is the second-largest port in Europe, and they’re aiming to be entirely climate-neutral by 2050 ⚓🧵

On day two of our Study Mission, we toured VDL Bus and Coach BV’s electric bus factory in Roeselare! The 20,000 square meters hall builds hundreds of zero-emission, all-electric buses yearly, and features green roofs, natural light, and rainwater reuse.

On Day 2 of our Study Mission, we visited the Steelanol facility in Ghent and received a briefing from our hosts @lanzatech.bsky.social. The Steelanol facility, a partnership with ArcelorMittal, is the first large-scale plant to do this work.

Our study mission began at EU headquarters with a briefing from the Directorate-General for Climate Action on the EU Emissions Trading System, the world’s longest-running carbon market. The ETS has helped cut emissions 38% below 1990 levels, and the EU is on track for a 55% cut by 2030.
