100% this. How you deliver the variety matters, but this is the core issue. Combat has to have some variety to be interesting in the long haul. Games tend to target new players and forget this, and sacrifice variety for "speed". Or they create a complex "extras" system IMO Talislanta solved this.

Can we talk about combat in TTRPGs? Does anyone actually like it? I used to DM a *lot* of 5e, and the last campaign I ran I ended up house-ruling that all attacks hit, like Into the Odd. I was really grasping at straws because I was SO sick of slogging through combat.

no one has ever, not one time in reality, played a ttrpg exactly rules as written. there is too much slip in the way language works. don't even try, yo. the rules are suggestions, forever and always less important than the logic of the setting everypony's imagining together.

Here’s one I haven’t seen yet: Playing a TTRPG is, itself, an art form — and like any art form, individual players bring their unique strengths and perspective to each game. More players could benefit from treating their play as a skill to be developed rather than something innate or fixed.

Drow are not to be trifled with, I’m reading this over in anticipation of potentially running it for one of my groups, and I’m reminded how hard these modules were, and how flavorful. A last bastion dwarves city fighting against the humanoid armies of the Drow, that’s badass!
