In 1st Ed AD&D terms, this is two magic-users who have both summoned earth elementals. AD&D doesn’t specify their specific form. Once I saw this panel I decided that in my AD&D games earth elementals weren’t just “rocks”, So like here, one made of brass, one of mud.

This passage from a book on early Japanese industrialization immediately caught my eye. Former samurai of Feudal lords running companies and captaining ships in competition with government shippers in Meiji era Japan, transporting passengers, freight, rice and... This seems eminently gameable.

Here’s the sample dungeon from the “How to play D&D”book. I think it’s a great example, the numbers are low for different encounters, but for a first level party there are lots of lethal threats
