When you say âIslay whiskyâ to a group of people at a tasting, they already have a preconceived idea of what to expect before they have even nosed it, so trying to surprise them is tricky. This meant choosing an odd cask, a sneaky unpeated whisky, or as I opted for, something new. When we visited Ardnahoe, they hadnât had enough time to be ready to release any whisky yet, which meant we came away full of excitement but a touch disappointed.

Being proved right is a great feeling, especially when it comes to whisky. For the fifth dram of my tasting, I wanted a whisky that evoked all the best things I associate with Speyside whiskies: sherry casks, fruit-cake spices, and dusty dunnage warehousing. I thought it would be interesting to find a distillery that most people would have heard of, but to choose a whisky they would not have had.

Meeting an old friend after a long time apart is one of lifeâs great pleasures. You are quickly reminded what a joy it is to be in othersâ company, and the more time you spend together, the more you reveal the depth of that joy. The same is true of a favoured whisky that you havenât had in a while. Coming back to Glen Scotia 15 was a real pleasure.

Wemyss Malts â A Quarter Passed
The whisky drinking community is such a friendly and generous place. It has been a huge bastion of optimism and kindness over the last ten years. It has been a great source of friendship and has presented me with some money-canât-buy (or at least I canât afford) whiskies. Steve at The Whisky Wire has run over a decade of online tastings, and they have all been educational, informative, and fun.

I am a huge fan of a curveball in a whisky tasting. Veering away from what people expect is important - it keeps them guessing about what might come next, but this whisky even managed to blindside me. I love Ardmore. Itâs a distillery that rarely disappoints (unless you buy their standard bottlings, which are very dull), but this one is peated, and I really wasnât prepared for just how smoky it would be.

Lochlea â Orchard and Oak
Lochlea are part of the cool new gang in whisky. They havenât been around for long, distillation only began in 2018, but they found their groove almost straight away. They produce high-quality spirit, focus on sustainability, and have mastered the art of celebrating provenance without tipping into stuffiness. This makes them a great distillery to introduce to new whisky drinkers. Their whisky dispels the myth that only age-statement releases can be good, and shows how small differences in recipe or distillation can make a big impact.

On Sunday, I organised a Burnsâ Night blind whisky tasting at The Fallen Tree micropub in Clevedon. I chose six whiskies, one from each whisky-producing region in Scotland, so that we could take a six-whisky tour of the country. First up, we visited the Islands, travelling the short journey across the water from Oban, along the Sound of Mull, to Tobermory.

Generosity is such an important quality. It comes in many forms: generosity of hospitality, generosity of spirit, and even generosity of honesty. You must have these sorts of people in your life. Chris, who runs The Dram Team, is one of these people. I feel lucky to know him and am always buoyed by time in his company. Which brings me to a whisky.

The Johnnie Walker Experience
"In for a penny, in for a pound." The last whisky-based experience of our Edinburgh trip was the most likely to go horribly wrong. I like Johnnie Walker Black, and I have been lucky enough to try Johnnie Walker Blue, but I have never loved the brand nor felt that moved to try more of their whiskies. Their brand has always felt to me to be style over substance, but when in Rome (or in this case, Edinburgh).
