lrps its ok to have some things wrt canon wol characterization you don't agree with but i do think there comes a point where you have to accept that the narrative has to move forward somehow and even a "self-insert" protagonist like the wol is going to be given SOME characterization to do just that

i think there's always going to be a disconnect when you're trying to tell a linear story, while giving the player a broadly customizable vehicle by which to experience the story. eventually, there's going to be a line in the sand that says, "it has to happen this way for the story to progress."

some RPGs do it more elegantly than others (and personally i think ffxiv is very middle of the road in this regard), but at the end of the day, there IS a specific role your player character is occupying in the story. the writers aren't being malicious for saying, "this should be significant to you"
