In late 1981, an unknown company in Chicago created a bootleg Donkey Kong game titled "Mad Ape". This bootleg got a gimmick where the timer had reached zero, the game would go to "ape mode". Due to hardware issues, the sprites and the game over screen weren't rendered correctly.

Apparently, there was a prototype build of this bootleg with the graphics working correctly. The only existence of this were these photographs taken from an employee. The final build did not have the graphics displayed correctly.
