❓🎓Why despite a gender-blind admissions system, equally qualified female students in China are significantly less likely than their male peers to apply to and be admitted to elite universities?❕Social expectations are the real issue 📑

Why Dean Karlan, chief economist of USAID, resigned on Tuesday
He was hired in 2022 so the aid agency could get 'more bang for our buck' with its projects. He tried to reach out to help in the rebuilding of the agency. On Tuesday he tendered his resignation.

In Israel, it took civil society to stop Netanyahu's attempt to usurp power via judicial overhaul, not the feckless opposition. CS organized rallies, free teach-ins on college grounds and neighborhood venues, placing signs on highways, and threatening mass disobedience. Lessons here for the USA.

Why do I think these instances are interesting? To me, these are not just random instances that LLMs are sometimes wrong (like people), these are *diagnostic* that LLMs do not have a world model and are not “reasoning”, it exposes the basic architecture. Why? 1/n
