What about the physical enormity of the US? Does that force people to drive more? No, it doesn't. Canada is an even more spacious country, and residents drive a lot less (and are <1/2 as likely to die in a crash).

It's one thing to talk about building with-not-for your community. It's another to do it in real-time, at warp speed, with hundreds and thousands of users holding you accountable. Blacksky doesn't have all the answers but they are tending an outstanding commons and community to figure it out.

you won't attract enough users to break away from walled garden network effects by talking about atproto, the atmosphere, and bluesky. you build a product they need and will use daily, and you add social features because they are a good fit for the experience. atproto is an implementation detail.

This is an important, thoughtful post. Perhaps we shouldn’t focus only on dethroning X with its 300–400 million users, but also on Facebook Groups’ with its 1.6 billion users. Build communities for organizers, and everyone else will come.

it’s not a perfect metaphor, but in terms of social responsibility i think operating an autonomous AI agent account on Bluesky is like having a child, pet, or familiar — if it causes issues in public or bothers people, you as the “parent” are responsible even when you’ve done due diligence
