July 16, 1949 • Severe Thunder Storm This was the scene along Jasper Ave. near 109 St. on this day over three-quarters of a century ago. The deluge was the city's heaviest short-period rainfall in its history. Cars were left trapped while canoeists paddled their way down Jasper Avenue.

March 16, 1929 • Ritz Hotel (Muttart Block) The Muttart Block at 10346-97 St. was entirely transformed when it opened on this day as the Ritz Hotel. The original 5-storey structure opened in 1912 & designed by Magoon & MacDonald Architects. Demo'd in 1974 it stood where the current RAM is today.

January 12, 1903 • Queen's Avenue School OTD Queen's Avenue School officially opens. It was downtown's second major public school located just north of today's City Hall. Designed by architect, William S. Edmiston (1857-1903).

January 6, 1896 • College Avenue School On this day in Edmonton's history, our first brick school opened 129 years ago, & 15 years to the day after public education was established in Edmonton. (Jan. 6, 1881). Designed by Architect, George Nathan Flater (1863- 1948) of the firm Edmiston & Flater.
