I also DIY digitized about five mini DV tapes from late ‘80s to mid ‘90s from my childhood and burst into tears at the moment I heard the voices of my deceased grandparents. TL;DR — save your home movies, especially when they are on videotape. Two of the other mini DV tapes had already degraded.

Excellent journalism and scholarly analysis about an impending disaster for Americans. In addition to shutting down rural public media stations, it will have a significantly deleterious impact on the production of new documentaries.

When we rebuild our public media up from the ashes it will need to be much bigger, bolder, and better funded -- not so dependent on private capital and corporate sponsorships, but truly public. It will need to be more democratic, more independent, and capable of withstanding two-bit fascist regimes.

Can someone, anyone, Bueller, please demand to know where these so-called fines are going?

At the Northeast Historic Film's Summer Symposium in Bucksport, Maine. Fantastic talks on collecting and private archiving. Lots of film projection including a film we made via direct animation.

That picture is from the U of Colorado Boulder campus and it symbolizes that I am starting there next month in the Department of Cinema Studies and Moving Image Arts. I'll be teaching classes on media preservation and such.
