I'm nearing two years as department head (@ucphilosophy.bsky.social). The biggest surprise might be the sheer volume of letters I've had to write, for all kinds of purposes. 61 so far, just for this role--so, not including tenure letters, etc. They vary in depth but many are several pages. Wild.

My PhD student's NSF grant was terminated today. Her dissertation investigates why air pollution monitoring, metrics, and regulations don't properly capture the harms experienced by marginalized communities--esp in the most polluted Detroit neighborhoods. She and I are happy to talk with press etc.

This agency that I have known, studied, labored for, benefited from (and challenged to do better) is being destroyed. I am so sad.

1. I study how science works as a collective endeavor to make sense of the physical world. I also study how misinformation about science spreads and affects society. There are fewer examples more poignant than a Minnesota bill that would criminalize mRNA vaccines as weapons of mass destruction.

I got an email yesterday afternoon that my NSF SPRF Postdoctoral Fellowship was terminated. My grant focused on testing interventions to address online misinformation and I was 8 months into a two year appointment.

Seeking suggestions for how authors of critical commentary of the Trump administration can introduce their analysis other than the phrase, "Let me be clear." This phrase basically defines this entire genre of writing, and I'm so tired of it.
