Mother’s Day adventure. My mum is nursing broken ribs, so it’s a solo drive from Sheffield all the way to Penzance for me today. Wish me luck!

This evening I came across a picture book text, buried on an external drive, that I kind of like. Definitely needs work, but given I’ve been blocked on my own picture book writing (as opposed to collaborations and comics) for several years it’s a nice discovery.

Before the iPad app ProCreate brush engine got any good I made a brush set for Paintstorm Studio (excellent brush engine -glitchy app). You can still buy the set on Gumtree joelstewart.gumroad.com/l/IzTJm?layo... (but I don’t keep up with Paintstorm much and I’d recommend my ProCreate set instead).

From Tiny Dinosaurs (2016-ish?) The library records show me that kids and parents really go for this one when they get the chance, but for a variety of reasons it missed out on the marketing it needed to fly.

@bsky.app Enjoying it here so far, but if you could do something about portrait view for iPad that would be great. It’s currently really weird and glitchy and essentially doesn’t function, at least for me.

Took the dog out, and stepped into the rd to greet a neighbour (and try to stop Elsie barking so early in the morning). Next thing I knew I was at least 30 feet further down the rd feeling very fortunate to still be upright. We’re totally black-iced in on our steep rd today. #sheffield

I had this thing at the time about using typewriter carbon for drawing. Some waffle about getting out of my own way (since you can’t see the finished line while doing it). (Illustration from Moon Zoo by Dame Carol Ann Duffy, the then Poet Laureate).

I personally can’t look too hard or long at the drawing in these very early books, but this cover worked well I think.

Another one from that collection of Hans Andersen tales. This ended up as the cover of one german edition and I always thought it worked really well.

I happen to be going through old illustration work for a thing just now. This is one for a lesser known Hans Christian Andersen story contained in the collection I illustrated perhaps 20 years ago. I didn’t realise the book was still in print but it appears to be!
