I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

I think when we made the bar for acceptable presidential candidate conduct “is it legal” we were cooked. There’s a substantial portion of the US population that’s having a full mental breakdown right now.

Whenever UB is discussed I rarely ever hear about the reason why it exists and why it’s good: it’s how the compiler tells you about assumptions it needs for optimizations you almost certainly like a whole bunch. Best modern example is stacked/tree borrows in Rust unsafe regions.
