We founded the U of Arizona Center for East Asian Studies three years ago with a US Dept of Education grant. Last Friday marked the end of year 3 of 4. Though the grant was for four years, we have not received word about year 4 funding. Without this support, we have no choice but to close down.

This is Nanshan 南山 Park in Jinzhou 錦州. It was here that the Battle of Songjin was fought between Qing and Ming forces between 1639-1641. The mountain is also called 罕王殿山.

This is insane. All our Chinese citizen colleagues in Florida are apparently at risk of losing their jobs solely on the basis of their nationality

The 奉國寺 in Yi County, Jinzhou is the largest wooden building dating from the Liao period (constructed in 1004) in China. Inside are seven massive Buddha statues. It has been rebuilt in Yuan, late Ming, and Qing.

Passed by this random village and saw a shrine with a large stele. Decided to check it out on map and saw it's called 葛王存. Googled 葛王 and realized it was a Jurchen Jin nobility title. Really makes you wonder about the history of this village.

I find the squat toilets in Asia to be infinitely more hygienic than the seated toilets of the West 😂

Chinese village names are so interesting and can tell you a lot of things. It's clear this village was once a Ming weisuo installation, with a commander surnamed Han in charge. The village is named after the military camp.
