When the education system demands things that aren't developmentally appropriate, you end up creating issues not solving them. Young children are not meant to be static for long periods of time. If we insist they are, we create 'behaviour problems' that are actually just children behaving normally.

Today I told stories of creative schools at a gatherng of 200+ @thriveapproach.bsky.social practitioners. One of those was Our Lady of Lourdes Primary in @westlothiancouncil.bsky.social , who was named top primary in Scotland for their attainment outcomes. Who helped them get there? Teddy Bears!

We talked this morning at Scottish Childminding Assoc Conference quite a bit about the long-term impacts of the pandemic on young children's biology. It has affected speech & language development, which in turns predicts all sorts of adult outcomes. It's not going away. It is in their biology.

Look at this slide from the Speech & Language Workshop at Scottish Childminding Assoc this morning. Vocabulary at age 5 is a predictor of: - Literacy skills at age 11 - Unemployment at age 35 - Adult mental health Attuned, joyful relationships in childhood matter.

"I found that really emotional and shed a few tears." YES! Even online! Tears are always a sign of success for me. They are a sign of people being courageous in contemplating edgy questions. Thank you Scottish Childminding Assoc.

The importance of such relationships is why I also talked about the loss/end of them as 'bereavement'. Facing this takes courage from adults.

This morning's online session with Scottish Childminding Association. I understand we have 400 folks coming! I hope they leave my session, and the event, understanding how important they are. They craft relationships with children that change their brains.

Yes, good point. ‘We should aim to make childhood as magical as we can. Instead, we are allowing the opposite. It is not as though the multiple dimensions of the problem are unknown by either government or civil society…. What is lacking is the outrage to make this is an overriding priority.’

This is an illuminating thread. Thanks Suzanne. I always think about stories having the power to change things for the better but you’ve reminded me that it’s not always the case.

Important thread - scroll up. It's easy for many of us to recognise when Trump, other authoritarians or propagandists are talking BS, and wonder how others are so "easily" taken in. This respected researcher of early child development shows how it works, second-by-second. V important to know.

I always learn more about babies from Suzanne Zeedyk but the application of this to T*u*mp has been incredibly enlightening. Thank you!
