For #FossilFriday here is the partial skull and carapace of the recently described ‘carnivorous aetosaur’ from the Late Triassic of Texas. It provides significant new information about Coahomasuchus kahleorum.

This specimen was discovered at Ghost Ranch NM, but the holotype is from Petrified Forest NP. Named for the discoverer park naturalist Phillip Van Cleave as well as Charles L. Camp.

Oh groovy, our paper on the hindlimb biomechanics of the Triassic dinosauriform Lagosuchus is out! A quick thread for now. We uCT-scanned most of the existing skeletal material for this important outgroup to Dinosauria. We sorted through the elements and chose the best ones to make a 3D model from.

Happy #FossilFriday. Here are the fossil remains of the Austrian phytosaur Mystriosuchus steinbergeri, which were discovered in the Dead Mountains of Salzburg. Estimates suggest it might have reached a length of around 4 meters.

One of our best fossils collected from Petrified Forest. It is a ‘Rosetta stone’ specimen of Revueltosaurus callenderi providing key information on the osteoderm arrangement and clarifying relationships within Aetosauriformes.

This #FossilFriday let’s drop below the Permian-Triassic boundary, before the mass extinction. This stem-reptile is a pareiasaur: one of the largest reptiles of the Permian. This specimen is from #Zambia and was one of the best fossils I found as a new grad student on my first trip in 2011.

One infamous Triassic fossil is the ‘carnivorous aetosaur’ from Texas. Collected by the WPA in the 1940s it had only been mentioned in a published abstract in 1996. It is important because of its small size and ‘carnivorous’ dentition.

Hello Bluesky. I’m a vertebrate paleontologist from Arizona and since 1997 I’ve been trying to convince everyone how awesome the Triassic was. My discoveries include this guy, Revueltosaurus callenderi.
