From volcanoes to farmland: UF researchers are testing rock dust to improve Florida soils.

Prof. Oana Dumitru and student Emalee Ott are currently in the Cook Islands conducting fieldwork on an NSF-funded project investigating sea-level change during the Last Interglacial period to reconstruct past sea levels and improve our understanding of how ice sheets responded to a warmer climate.

There are no 🌋in Florida (we're geologists, we checked), but can adding volcanic rock dust improve soil health across the Sunshine State?🌴 UF Geology Prof. David Foster is part of a USDA-funded team that will be testing that idea!

🎉 We're thrilled to announce that UF Geology Assistant Professor Mickey MacKie (@gatorglaciology.bsky.social) is a recipient of one of just 10 UF Excellence Awards for Assistant Professors! 🎊 She is recognized for her innovative research on ice sheet dynamics and commitment to student mentorship.

🚨New Paper Alert!🚨 Prof Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba found that beach nourishment protects coasts, but links neighboring towns. Modeling and a New Jersey case study show frequent nourishers get lower efficiency while neighbors benefit; as retreat and sand costs rise, fair regional coordination is needed ⚒️

🚨New Paper Alert!🚨 I've got a new paper out in Science Advances where we show that the 2 byr old Chang'e 5 magma came from shallow depths in the lunar mantle, and that melting was likely driven by top-down heating of the mantle by radioactive decay in a sub-crustal KREEP layer. ⚒️🧪🔭 Check it out:
