It's been a while, but 2 Journey Plotter updates this month. USS Yorktown (PG-1) 1910-1911, west coast of all Americas, added to her journey starting in 1889. USRC Thetis 1903-1904, US west coast, Bering Sea, Alaskan, Russian and Hawaiian waters, added to her journey starting in 1899. #NavalHistory

USRC Thetis 1906 logs are full of surprises. In August, after reaching Point Barrow, she met the Norwegian sloop Gjøa, led by Roald Amundsen and a crew of six, who had just managed to pass for the first time through the Northwest passage! #NavalHistory #OldWeather

Under the command of Captain Schley, conning her from the crow's nest while searching for gaps in the ice, the rescue expedition led by Thetis managed to rescue 7 of the 25 members of Greely expedition and get back 6 of them in the United States. A really awesome piece of #navalhistory

Many people are unaware that there were black sailors in the Royal Navy during the age of sail. If you mention it they assume you must have searched desperately to find some representation. But do you know who really wanted to ensure these sailors were represented? People at the time.

This month's JP update: Some estimated positions of USC&GSS Carlile P. Patterson's journey for 1884-1889 are improved. In 1884 she sailed from the US east to the west coast, the long way around, no #PanamaCanal yet. From 1885 onwards she surveyed the coast of #Alaska. #NavalHistory #CitizenScience
