One of my New Year’s resolutions was to bike-commute for all trips under 4 miles and I’m doing it. Even with kids extracurriculars on opposite sides of town and every day essentials spread all over, Fort Collins investments in active transportation and bike infrastructure made it possible.

It’s in the 20’s, snow is still on the ground, but we got to get the 7 y/o to cheer practice. Bonus that parking is right in front of the exit.

Snow walk. ⛄️🌨️😍 Fort Collins clears trails before roads. People who walk, bike, or use a wheelchair aren’t sidelined by weather. Keeping trail access open supports multimodal transportation and helps keep traffic moving under icier conditions.

My cargo bike CAN where my car CAN’T. Car: Caps out at 3 kids. I’ve got 2 kids. Hosting more than 1 friend? Nope. 🙅‍♀️ Bike: Seats 4 kids w/ a 5th on the back. 🤩 The smartest upgrade for us wasn’t a $40k minivan - it was a bike. 🚲💡 #cargobikelife

Bike Bus empowers kids beyond the ride to school - it teaches road safety and makes bike-commuting a habit. My kids best friend learned to ride just to join BikeBus. Now, she bikes home with us weekly for a playdate and dinner. Seeing these kids grow in confidence and independence is everything.

I started #BikeBus a year ago. 🌟Few weeks -> 6 to 40 participants. 🌟A year -> 400% increase in families biking their kids to/from school. 🌟 Kids biking on non-Bike Bus days are WAY UP! 5/8 was Walk & Roll. We went BIG! The local newspaper was there to cover it. dentonrc.com/education/de...

Bike Bus is back! (With a Bike Bus tracker. 🥳) Kids were so ready for it. I was ready for it and already miss those crisp temps.❤️❄️ With warmer weather ahead, now is the time to start sending out ride along invitations to our school and city decision makers. We’ve got work to do.

Getting kids ready for school is tough.❄️😩Hot cocoa is a magic incentive to arrive on time. 🏫☕️ Sleeping in, morning sluggishness, slowing down on the ride - way less on hot cocoa days. On arrival, we sip, chat, & connect before they start the day. 🥰 They can’t get this connection in seat of a car.

One is not like the other.❄️🥶🥰 Even in the right gear, winter-biking for kids can be tough. They bike to school 3x a week. The kids have different cut offs and know the cargo bike is available to them if they need it. Youngest - ☀️🌧️❄️🤗. Oldest - ❄️😡 On this day, they learned about windchill. ❄️💨😆

4.5mi in high 40’s. During break, their bike muscles deteriorate making it hard to get back into school routines. Not this time!💪 We started snack runs throughout the week. Whatever snack they want must be hauled on their own bike. Kid has new panniers so huge grins.😄

Bike Bus at 38F! ☃ My cold weather attendance expectations were exceeded! I attribute that to our biking kids. When kids see peers biking in cold weather it plants a seed of confidence. (There’s also Bike Bus kids spreading the word of how uncool it is to be dropped off in a car by your parent. 😆)

The @ternbicycles.bsky.social storm shield protects the kids from cold winds and rain. It’s also place for steam art. 🎨 Winter biking is precious. 🚲❤️ (Afterwards, she drew butts and giggled the whole way home. 😆)

Donut Run - Bike edition. Strip malls often have terrible bike parking or none. Today was none. After a quick alert to the store of the bike parking situation, I asked if we could bring the bike in. They agreed. (Most stores agree.) Enough people asking signals the need to the store. So ask. 🚲❤️

We Texans are winter-weenies. 45F in Texas is treated as freezing. 🥶❄️ In prep for colder months, I sent out a winter-biking guide for kids. Today was 45F. Kids showed up! Some in t-shirts 😂 but most in winter gear. Rain or shine, the Bike Bus rolls! Despite the chill, families are here for it.🚲❤️

Bike Bus!🚲🚲💨 The past few weeks have been really dark and chilly. Daylight savings and warmer mornings brought everyone back out. Pictures don’t do justice to the size of today’s Bike Bus.❤️

Me: “🎵Got all my groceries - yum, yum, yum! Gonna go home and meal prep for my tum, tum🎵. . .” Universe:”LOL, no.” Damnit. I have not yet got myself a flat kit. I know, I know. My local bike shop, Velo Republic, is amazing. They picked up my bike and it will be ready later for Bike Bus.

Bike Rodeo brought in people from all over the county! 🤠 Kids raced on the track and did many rounds of the obstacle courses. Other kids started out balancing and, by the time they left, were fully biking. My oldest on why she loved the track: “I’m free, safe from cars, and never have to stop.”❤️
