As federal enforcement of gun laws weakens, RI must strengthen our own laws. The bill banning possession of assault weapons already passed the House, has the support of the AG, and 24 of 37 Senators are sponsors. Please call your Senator today and ask them to support H5436A at the vote tomorrow.

“Vote first, ask questions later” is a 10/10 headline for the actions of the RI Senate Judiciary committee today. Meanwhile, the House bill had months of vetting by all parties, and earned the support of the AG who would be tasked with enforcing it. That is the bill that should get a vote.

There is no reason to change a bill that is currently sponsored by 24 of 37 @risenate.bsky.social members and has been fully vetted by the AG’s office. The Senate bill that allows unlimited purchases of assault weapons for a year, and then does not ban possession, is not an assault weapons ban.

@risenate.bsky.social should vote on the Assault Weapons Ban passed by the House and vetted by the AG, not one rewritten by the gun lobby during the last week of the session. A bill that does not ban possession of assault weapons is not an assault weapons ban.
