I heard a short story, on average, is rejected 22 times before it finds publication, but I cannot even find 22 relevant magazines to submit to in Chill Subs, and most take four months or more to deliver rejection. To put a story properly through its paces would cost me half a lifetime 😵‍💫 #amWriting

More modern songs should have an interlude where a guy with a really deep voice speak-sings the chorus. We lost something as a society when we stopped doing that.

My first draft has always been 20k words shorter than where I will end up, adding context, interiority, bridging scenes in response to beta reader feedback. There’s also usually some random world building that gets cut way down in favor of more character backstory. #amWriting #WritingCommunity

I’ve discovered a new framework for the editing process and it’s made me realize how chaotic and haphazard my edits were for my last two novels. Listening to Mercy of Gods by James Corey and I’m struck by the use of physicality to convey character/emotion over interiority. In some ways it’s traditional: readers are left to interpret their actions—but it’s also very modern, leading the arc of the trend away from interiority. #Scifi #BookSky

Sometimes I rely on the presence or absence of “artificial gravity” in a story as my standard for whether something is a ‘hard scifi’.
