I think the voice of the various chapters introductions in Darkness and Distance is essentially second person runaway intrusive thoughts

Personally I think the fact that Monsterhearts to me was what DnD is for most people is kinda the Rosetta Stone for why my work is like this

I dunno I just think it's neat if you're playing as a multiplayer game and hand the story off to someone and when they get back to you they have to begin with "so I've scratched out some of your resources, your assistant is dead and so is your professor"

A fun thing with Darkness and Distance is how decisions in one chapter can shift the story closer to different versions of Frankenstein. If the Scientist takes an assistant who survives the first chapter the Creature's tale starts like the 1931 film

Fun fact: Because the first game I read was Monsterhearts for a while I called all classes/playbooks/whatever in any game "Skins" until I got asked to stop saying the phrase "Blades Skins" because it was Too Gross
