Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

When we buy into AI, even when it's "benign" like, "This AI doesn't use unlicensed art to generate new images," it's still adding to the climate damage and inequities, while propelling the tech further into Ed spaces. #TLSky #SchoolLibrarians
