Once more for those at the back: There is NO WAY to reliably identify trans people, and certainly no dignified and respectful way to ask any person to prove their sex in a public facility. This will just cause harm to trans people and to cisgender people who don’t conform to gender stereotypes.

Human Spaceflight: 07 Dec 1972. Day becomes night at Cape Canaveral as the final launch of an Apollo Saturn V sends astronauts Gene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt and Ron Evans to the Moon on Apollo 17.

Human Spaceflight: 23 Nov 1972. A fourth attempt to launch the massive N1 rocket ends in failure. N1-7L failed 107 seconds after launch, just seven seconds before first stage separation. While there were plans for a fifth launch, Soviet leadership had run out of patience and the project was canned.

Random thought while watching 'Planet of the Daleks'. Would it have been more narratively satisfying if Marat had been part of the plan to escape up the shaft but had sacrificed himself as the resolution to the Episode Three cliffhanger, letting go of the rope to allow the others to rise?

The most interesting podcast discussions are born from the most contentious material. And boy do these two books fit that bill! When looking back over the history of Doctor Who’s expanded media life, these are definitely a ‘WTF?!’ moment….

Human Spaceflight: 29 Jul 1972. The Soviets attempt to launch their second Salyut space station. Unfortunately the second rocket stage fails and the space station ends up becoming a crater a few hundred miles from the launch site.

Had hoped to be arriving at The Capitol soon. Instead I am standing in the middle of the M26 along with a bunch of other drivers in a ping queue of stationary cars. Apparently an accident on the M25. Oh well, at least it’s a pleasant day. Nothing to do but wait….

Human Spaceflight: 26 Jun 1972. Kosmos 496 is launched. This is a test flight of a modified Soyuz, with new systems following the fatal Soyuz 11 flight. The crew would be reduced to two to allow room for cosmonauts to wear spacesuits during launch and re-entry, and the solar panels were deleted.

Yep, still get excited when I sit down in front of the TV and can actually WATCH 'The Nightmare Begins' and 'Devil's Planet'. 🥳

If there is one thing the last few weeks have proved it’s that huge numbers of people don’t actually have the first clue how elections work in the UK. Given that it has been this way for ages and there is ample information provided I can only assume it is wilful ignorance.

Human Spaceflight: 27 Apr 1972. Apollo 16 splashes down after a highly successful mission. Astronauts john Young, Charlie Duke and Ken Mattingly are in good shape, as are the many lunar rock and soil samples they returned.

What a final that was! Huge congratulations to Wu Yize, and sone fine snooker from Shaun Murphy. A final frame decider. Superb!

Human Spaceflight: 24 Apr 1972. Apollo 16's lunar module Orion lifts off from the lunar surface. Having been unable to follow the ascent on Apollo 15 because of a broken drive on the TV camera, this time the rover was not quite in the right spot so it was lost during the tilt.

Human Spaceflight: 23 April 1972. On the third and final EVA of Apollo 16, John Young and Charlie Duke once more drove the rover out to some distant craters to sample the rocks and soil. While there they encountered what appeared as a large boulder, but turned out to be much bigger than expected!

Human Spaceflight: 22 April 1972. John Young and Charlie Duke set out for another day of driving around the lunar surface collecting rock and soil samples on Apollo 16. Each stop was covered by live TV broadcasts, but by this point very few were watching.

Human Spaceflight: 21 Apr 1972. Apollo 16's Lunar Module 'Orion' landed successfully in the Descartes highlands. Later that day the first EVA was performed by astronauts John Young and Charlie Duke. One of their tasks was to document the rover performance, a section dubbed the 'grand prix'.

Once more a Saturn V roars off the pad, carrying astronauts John Young (Gemini 3, Gemini 10, Apollo 10), Charlie Duke (first flight) and Ken Mattingly (who had just missed out on Apollo 13) aloft on the Apollo 16 mission to the Descartes region of the lunar highlands.

Human Spaceflight: 11 Oct 1971. The world's first space station, Salyut 1, re-entered the atmosphere and was destroyed. After the deaths of the Soyuz 11 crew, it was hoped the station could survive until the Soyuz could be redesigned to improve safety. Delays meant the station was lost.

Oh I do love when a nicely planned journey gets all messed up. Gone from having plenty of time to grab lunch before the event to will probably arrive just in time for it if nothing else goes wrong. 😖

Human Spaceflight: 12 Aug 1971. Kosmos 434 is launched. As with many other launches, it was not until some time later it was revealed to be another test of the Soviet lunar lander. At this point they still had plans to send cosmonauts to the Moon.

So depressing to see hoax theories develop in real time as Artemis II circumnavigates the Moon. Social media algorithms make it spread so quickly. The wilful ignorance is staggering. The Brandolini effect is in full force....

I can’t make this one, but the Jason and Si quizzes are always great fun so highly recommend them! Plenty for the most accomplished fact fans, as well as enough that even slightly rubbish quizzers like me can manage semi-respectable scores.

Another kit from Lend A Brick. The Technic Jeep Wrangler was quite complex for its size but a decent replica with suspension, doors, folding back seat, a winch hook on the front. And very much a case of 'how on Earth do I take this apart again?!' when the time came to return it!
