My hottest #TTRPG take these days is: Character backstories should almost entirely stay in the past. As a player, I deeply do not want my character to end up "dealing with" backstory stuff during our campaign, but i weirdly see OTHER players struggle to navigate backstory stuff during play.

#TTRPG #GMTip Unfortunately, a GM cannot MAKE a game tense, scary, or unsettling. That power lies almost entirely with the PCs and the players. The GM can supply tense moments, scary descriptions, or unsettling circumstances - but if the PCs are flippant and wacky, the game will be, too.

RE: The "I don't track health/damage in my #TTRPG" GMs are supposed to be playing the game, too. If you're never surprised by the result of a randomly generated roll, you're bypassing the spirit of a game that allows emergent gameplay in favor of predictability for the purpose of a scripted plot.

there is also be said about how writing Is hard, and people can be frustrated with the process something (i know i am), but it being hard does not mean it isn't something I also Love. there are games that are hard, but i still enjoy playing them. So far my favorite part of The Pitt season 2 has been when Dr. Robby looks at Yana Kovalenko, who has a horrible burn on her leg, and simply says: "I'm glad you came in." A beautifully simple, direct, welcoming validation. It made my ADHD empathic brain sparkle in a pleasant way.

#DMtip For "heroic fantasy" games, halve the HP and double the number of monsters in 5e/5.5e. You can ALWAYS provide more encounters, you can't always get another chance for a PC to do the heroic, interesting thing. Lean into the Duncan Idaho, Alice, Motoko, Blade, Belmont fantasy with lethality.

Working on an analogy (my primary language) comparing running TTRPGs to hosting a road trip. While it's fine to itemize and plan every hour, stop, and activity, a detour or flat throws off everything. Just a destination, some cash, and vibes may be loose and chaotic, but its hyper flexible.

6 days out of the week: "Food shall not exist in our awareness until 5pm or later, for those are the golden hours in which we consume." 1 day, usually wednesday, out of the week: "It's 11am and if you do not eat something this second, i'm going to light this house on fire with you in it."

So sorry to have to keep sharing this, but we need to be able to make rent this month (which is £800). My partner doesn't hear back until next month about the jobs he's applied and interviewed for unfortunately, so anything helps to make ends meet. Thank you and, again, sorry 💜

One thing that gets talked about a LOT in videgame development is establishing the major systems of a game as though players have never held a controller or moved a mouse before. Some players don't know the camera can move. TTRPGs need to do that, and spend more than a page on it.

Players are responsible for tone and complexity in your game, not the GM, Module, System, or any other aspect. No amount of gothic description, punishing mechanics, or creepy music can replace a player willing to let their character be afraid or make mistakes. Players, alone, control that knob.

Question for my #TTRPG folks. Do you use Henchmen / Hirelings / Personnel in your games to work with/against your PCs? I seem obsessed with turning TTRPGs into "employee management simulator" and i'm curious if anyone else enjoys that stuff? The REAL fantasy is loyal competent employees paid well

I found the opening hour and a half of Kokuho (2026) to be fantastic - full of drama and artistry. The next hour of the movie watching artists suffer shitty pointless lives of misery and abuse is expected, unwanted, and exhausting. The last half hour is sorrowful and beautiful. 8/10 for me, too.
