Terrific @blindeke.bsky.social article on Lyndale Ave. He does a great job listing the many issues with the design put forward by the county and asks the fundamental question: "What the hell happened here?"

Did you know: On Lyndale Ave, average daily traffic has dropped dramatically over the last 20 years, according to MNDoT. Seems to me the county's Lyndale redesign ignores this information.

Are daycare and preschool two separate problems? In our household, we found reasonably affordable daycare ($1200/month). This year, our oldest was ready for preschool, but there is no public "all day" option. We had to send him to private preschool, which is more than double the cost of daycare.

One of the things I love about Minneapolis is that it's clear that there is a community that genuinely cares about making the city better, and I think that in many instances, the city has made decisions that reflect that. I hope we can get the county on board in the future as well.

I went to the Lyndale reconstruction open house today and listened to Josh Potter talk to others for a while. My take is that the county has no plans to change any major aspect of the design moving forward. This is what they are submitting to the city for approval.

We definitely had the longest bike out on the road today. Had to pick up our Urban Arrow from a tune-up at Perrenial. We rode the Trek there with a pit stop at Kyle's Market to drink some milk right out of a half gallon container. Hitched up the bike and towed it home. Easy peasy.

In this week's Hennepin County Active Transportation Meeting, the county cited the Johnson St NE SUP as a success - helping to shape the choice for including a SUP on Lyndale. Look at the most recent bike and pedestrian counts on Johnson, that I could find (2017): Ped: 80/day Bike: 20/day

1000 miles in 5 months on the Urban Arrow actually makes our car the tertiary vehicle in the garage.

This choice is what baffles me most. We have defined issues traveling this corridor now; we have defined modes share goals for 2030. We're leveraging our opportunity to solve existing problems for what? To achieve future mode share goals that we haven't even been discussed yet?

Learned more about Lyndale: 1. They are planning for BRT and they want full 11.5ft wide stations.

The irony is that one of the transportation modes in this corridor is directly responsible for the increased needs for stormwater management and seems to be the one mode that isn't being sacrificed.

The more time I spend looking at the Lyndale Ave redesign, the more upset I get. Even the paltry features they've provided to make the street safer and more livable are "under discussion."

After riding 3000 miles on my Specialized Globe Haul since early March in snow and salt and rain and mud and dirt, I was starting to get nervous about wear on the drive train. Went to check the chain and found basically no wear!

Also, tracking bike maintenance costs highlighted the high relative cost of bike consumables compared to analogous car compents. Bike brake pads and tires cost about 2x per mile mote than pads and tires for cars - 2c/mi vs 1c/mi! Hard to believe this should be the case for 50-70lb bikes.

Long Islanding it this week for a family reunion. Returning to my parents' in NJ, the options were drive 3.5 hrs, through NYC or take LIRR 3.5 hrs, transfer to NJ Transit at Penn Station. Made the right choice. Got to just sit with my 3 yr old: no stress, seamless transfers. Back to MPLS tomorrow.

When we ride our bike to daycare in the morning, my son and I point out garbage trucks. Extra enthusiasm for green trucks - that is his favorite color, and I've adopted it as my favorite. Now, I find that when I ride alone, I get a pang of excitement when I see a green garbage truck.
