The summer of 2001 I was a Watch Stander on the Secretary of State's communications and briefing staff. The #intel and #LawEnforcement communities knew something big was coming, and U.S. overseas posts were on high alert.

Proud to be a member of @steadystatevets.bsky.social Public service in defense of democracy ought to sound redundant, but here we are.

My parents took me out of a country where this was the norm and where it led to the execution and imprisonment of millions of innocent people. They brought me here, to America, believing that it would not happen here. And yet here we are.

“Report foreign invaders.” This is how authoritarian states speak—dehumanize outsiders, recruit citizens to police one another, and frame fear as patriotism. In a democracy, law enforcement should be neutral, rights-based, and professional, and not use language of repression.
