Had the chance to present my analysis of Jiang Qing's #蔣慶 notion of revenge and its roots in Kang Youwei's #康有為, Liao Ping's #廖平, and Chen Zhu's #陳柱 ideas at FAU Erlangen's #DeutscherOrientalistentag yesterday. Thanks to my colleagues for the great panel!

I'm always so amazed by how long people can work on a single project/book. A similar case is Chen Li #陳立 who worked on his 公羊義疏 for at least thirty years. Unhappy with what Xu Yan #徐彥 did during the Tang, he began compiling this massive subcommentary around the age of 20.

ad: discourse on Nine Familial Extermination on X. While Gongyang Confucianism #公羊學 doesn't recognize it as a legal tool, #Revenge #復仇 takes on the function of punishing enemies. Instead of the whole enemy family, it's the single person who wronged a member of one's own nine grades of kinship #九族.

Still wondering how I ended up on a #PredatoryJournal's mailing list for a Mexican physics conference with my #EACP presentation. How would this title fit into "Science Set Journal of Physics"? And it's their 9th email, so they really want my paper on #劉逢祿, #康有為, and #蔣慶!

Having read Levenson's 13-page study of #廖平, I am utterly confused. His reading of Liao is so negative that he cannot even objectively evaluate that Liao wasn't the first to read the #春秋 esoterically but that all of Gongyang Confucianism #公羊學 before him did so already.

I love that Huang Kaiguo 黃開國 in his 公羊學發展史 introduces Liao Ping #廖平, a famous late-Qing #Chunqiu #春秋 scholar, by stating that he lived 80 Chunqius 春秋 (also means ‘years’) long. He really had to go for that pun!

Gong Zizhen #龔自珍 (1792-1841) became famous for his poetry and as an early influence on the reform movements of the late 1800s, surrounding figures like Kang Youwei #康有為 and Liang Qichao #梁啟超. As grandson of Duan Yucai #段玉裁 and educated by his mother (1/6)Pi

Working on all those great thinkers who seem to have their careers take off below my age can be demotivating. But I've come across some famous historical figures that struggled with their careers in some way. I hope this gives #motivation to people to keep doing their thing!

While visiting friends and family in Munich, I had the chance to listen in on a workshop on #materiality in traditional and modern East Asian art organized by @lmumuenchen.bsky.social and @utokyoofficial.bsky.social.

Over the past 5 weeks I presented my research on 5 different occasions: 3 conferences, 1 workshop, and 1 department event. Getting all the feedback from scholars at various institutions was great, but I am happy to finally having the time to let all this flow into my thesis.

Made it back from the #SACP to #Leuven. Had a blast at the four conferences I attended over the past four weeks, but now I‘m rather happy to get some rest and concentrate on my thesis again. Thanks for accompanying me to 3/4 conferences @marcopouget.bsky.social.

Went through my pictures from my time at #清華大學 and found this beautiful 尊 #bronzevessel from an exhibition on the art from the small state of 噩. On the inside, it says 作寶彝. Especially the #elephant-like “deities” on top of a bigger face stand out to me on this one.

Among many inspiring presentations on revenge in pre-modern and modern literature, tattooing culture, #耽美小说, #志怪, and #QingLaw, I had the chance to present my own research on #劉逢祿’s notion of revenge and his limiting thereof to highlight nonviolence.

Our workshop on #revenge in #Chinesehistory started with a relatable, almost autobiographic introduction by @ciaota.bsky.social today. Very focused, enthusiastic working atmosphere so far here at @china-kuleuven.bsky.social!

Our workshop has finally commenced and I am baffled by the deep discussions we have already gotten into. Covering #公羊學, the #五一廣場 #manuscripts, #墨子, #禮記, and many more sources and traditions, it has been a wild but tremendously productive journey today. More to come!

Had the chance to give a quick introduction to my research at our #sinology institute's 10-minute-sessions this week. Now it seems that half my colleagues became very interested in the topic of #revenge. We definitely had some lively discussions afterwards!

Found the oddest nickname for Gongyangxue 公羊學 so far. The 三國志 states: "Commandant Zhong Yao did not like the Gongyang [tradition] but liked Mister Zuo's [tradition], calling Mister Zuo's [tradition] the highest office, but calling the Gongyang [tradition] a cake vendor."

I‘m always fascinated by prints of big compilations. The sheer amount of text, these sometimes cram onto a single page is baffling. Yes, it is handy as the books need less space and all. But 6 columns per on a single folded page is quite something! #printing #sinology

At times I get frustrated when academic papers don't properly cite their sources and I have to search for hours to find the correct source. Today, I came across Ling Shu 凌曙 citing Mengzi 孟子, but Mengzi never said 矯枉者過其正. Turns out it was the Chunqiu fanlu 春秋繁露.

A while ago, I discovered this character in a Chinese restaurant in Leuven. Pronounced as Zhōngguó (中國), it is one of the few polysyllabic sinographs in use, but seemingly not a very well-known.

Came across Kong Guanglin's 孔廣林 reconstruction of the fragments from He Xiu 何休 and Zheng Xuan's 鄭玄 discourses and first thought it was a printing error as I only knew Kong Guangsen 孔廣森. Turns out they are brothers and their father, a 69th generation descendant of Kongzi, seemingly just loved trees?
