What do we think about this "writing tip"? It certainly makes the phases shorter, but does that necessarily make them better? Sometimes the longer phrase helps with the rhythm of a sentence. Sometimes it might be better to switch to a verb (the legislature intended). Is this generalization helpful?

To expand: A good use for (cleaned up) is boilerplate, when case 1 quotes case 2 quoting case 3, etc. So if you quote the summary judgment standard (e.g.) nobody is suspicious of (cleaned up). But when the quote is an unfamiliar holding, the court might want to double check.

I'm not really in favor of this idea. First, (cleaned up) is intended for quotations from judicial opinions, on the theory that the quoted language becomes part of the new opinion. I don't think it's appropriate for quotations from the record, for example, or parties' briefs. /1
