I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

My anecdotal “I’m not an expert, I just go here” anecdata is that the lines at customs are also currently horrendous. I don’t even know what you do if you have a connecting domestic flight and anything less than a six-hour layover. Just live there, I guess.

"After all, despite a slow start, NIH spent most of its budget by the end of the last fiscal year." But ONLY because NIH MYFed so many grants. Newly funded research dropped by 24% - that's a HUGE cut. And it doesn't account for all the money from cut studies that went back to the treasury.

"More than a quarter of respondents have laid off lab members, and more than 2 out of every 5 have canceled planned research. Two-thirds have counseled students to consider careers outside the ivory tower." This is multiyear funding and grant terminations in action.

OMB always reviews agencies' plans for how they will spend their money before issuing apportionments. But this year agencies didn't automatically get a portion of their funds right away once the spending bill was signed, as we reported last month. They had to wait till the review was complete.

OMB has posted the full-year apportionments for NIH. openomb.org/file/11511545 I believe this means that NIH now has the spending authority to fund grants! There may be nuances and I will be tracking these as best I can.

BREAKING: @delauro.house.gov announces at a House Oversight hearing with NIH director Jay Bhattacharya that OMB approved the agency's apportionment last night. That means the agency should have access to its appropriated funds — 42 days after its spending bill passed.

The longer this goes on the less likely it is they’ll be able to spend their appropriations in a timely fashion. Hence, more multi-year grants.
